What the law says

South Lake Tahoe's amended Vacation Home Rental Ordinance (Ordinance 2025‑1200) introduced mandatory monitoring requirements for all VHR permit holders outside the Tourist Core. Here's what you need to know:

Indoor noise monitors and outdoor cameras 

Every VHR outside the Tourist Core must install indoor noise monitoring devices and outdoor cameras. Properties within the Tourist Core are not subject to this requirement.

Permits are capped and competitive 

The city caps VHR permits in residential zones and once the cap is reached, new applicants go on a waitlist. A permit is a limited asset worth protecting.
